POST-COVID CONDITIONS FACT SHEET

Post-COVID Conditions (PCC) is an umbrella term for the wide range of physical and mental symptoms 4+ weeks after initial infection, including those who had a mild or asymptomatic infection.

Post-COVID Conditions can be developed by anyone with evidence of a past COVID-19 infection including those with:

  • A prior positive test;
  • Distinct clinical features of COVID without an alternate diagnosis;
  • Strong epidemiological link to a positive (ex. household member or known close contact).

This condition is more likely in:

  • Children and teens who have been hospitalized;
  • Older children and adolescents;
  • Those with a history of allergic disease.

While symptoms vary greatly, some of the most common symptoms include chronic fatigue or post-exertional malaise, difficulty breathing, headaches, persistent loss of or change in taste or smell, difficulty sleeping, and mood changes.

As a school nurse, I can play an important role educating students and their families about Post-COVID Conditions and helping students manage the symptoms of Post-COVID Conditions and remain in school.
